The boys join the army, and you can imagine what happens next. Okay, so maybe this isn't their best comedy. Still it's Laurel and Hardy, and that's enough for me.

The New York Hat was directed by D W Griffith for the Biograph Studio in 1912. It has many of Griffith's stock players in it. You may spot Mae Marsh as a gossip or Lillian Gish as a customer in the store but the main roles are played by Lionel Barrymore as the pastor and Mary Pickford as he girl. The script was written by Anita Loos. It is a gentle story with a clear moral, but I thought the real star had to be the hat.

A World War 2 comedy directed by John Ford. Well, even great directors can occasionally crank out a dud. This misfire is the proof. To be honest, the absurd screenplay shares a large part of the blame. Huge cast (over 100) and excellent production values. Neither helps much. TRIVIA: June Haver refused to play Colleen Townsend's role. Smart move. CAST NOTE: The film debuts of Vera Miles and Ken Lynch.

In their farm house in a New York village, Ma Shelby prepares breakfast for her four children, Isaac, Tommy, Johnny and Susan, and then awakens them. The racket the boys make as they play and fight awakens their father, who spanks the eldest, Isaac. When a visitor chides Pa for not working, Ma sticks up for her husband, saying that he has a weak back and that he is waiting for a promised government job. Directed by Henry King.
